First United Community Ministry Society

Committed to the work of social and political transformation at the local level we continue our long history of working with First United.

How We Support

Currently, members of our community hold positions of responsibility on the Board of First United which provides leadership to bring about the vision of “a neighbourhood where every person’s worth is celebrated, and all people thrive.”

This vision includes an 11-storey building purpose-built to suit the needs and interests of the community. SHUC donated on behalf of the Community of Faith. We have members leading the First Forward Capital Campaign, individual members donating to that campaign and members donating to the Buy a Brick initiative that will bring more indigenous public art to the Downtown Eastside. This new building incorporates climate resiliency into the design of the new building. The measures taken to protect DTES community members from extreme weather conditions are in keeping with our SHUC Climate Justice goals.
