I'm New
You are welcome.
Worship at Shaughnessy Heights United is a joyous, spirit-filled time of community where we praise God and learn to grow in the Way of Jesus. We love to gather, sing, pray, laugh and learn! When we worship we fall open to new attitudes, new possibilities, and new ways of loving.
As an Affirming Ministry of the United Church of Canada we are always growing in our understanding of welcome and hospitality. As a community of Jesus we wish to honour the many intersections that shape our personal identities: race, colour, sexual orientation, gender, socio-economic status, age and ability.
Here is some more information about us:
Our Sunday morning worship starts at 10 am and most people arrive some time after 9:45 am. Everyone is welcome whenever they can make it, including after worship starts.
We have a large screen at the front of the church which lets everyone know what is happening next and on which the words to hymns and bible readings are projected. The worship service is about an hour long.
We have an amazing choir which supports worship with music from a variety of traditions. The choir sits in the pews during worship, which really helps the rest of us find our voices!
Our services are live-streamed and the cameras focus is on the front of the church, where worship is being led, but the congregation may occasionally be on screen.
There is a time for tea and coffee and conversation after the service in the church hall.
Our services are live-streamed and you can watch live and past worship services on YouTube.
Children are welcome in worship
There is a play and creativity space at the front of the church for children of all ages. If your children prefer to sit with you, they are welcome to come up to this play area during the worship leader’s time with children or at any time during the service and to come and go as they please. You can sit with your children in this area or in the adjacent pew, if you like.
On the last Sunday of the month, we have a special program for children which starts after children’s time. It takes place in the Chapel, which is right next to the church sanctuary in which we worship. You are welcome to go with your child to the program. Your child is welcome to stay in the sanctuary if they prefer.
Children are always encouraged to participate as there are no barriers to God’s table of Great Love. (We celebrate at the Table about 6 times each year)
We hope that you will enjoy your time with us. There is nothing you need to do and are welcome to ask for assistance at any time.
You are welcome to wear what feels most comfortable for you.
The church is fully accessible, with a ramp into the building on the south side, west end of the building. If you prefer to use the ramp and someone is dropping you off, there is a circular driveway which takes you to the ramp: entering from Connaught Drive and exiting on West 33rd Avenue. There are accessible gender-neutral washrooms in the entry to the church (the narthex).
We don’t pass an offering plate during the service (except at Christmas and Easter). As a visitor, we don’t expect you to make a donation or offering but if you would like to contribute to the life and work of our church, you can do so online or leave an offering in the plate in the foyer of our church as you enter or leave.
All are welcome to participate in the Sacrament of the Lord’s Table aka Communion where we remember the last meal Jesus ate with his friends through prayer, bread and grape juice. We celebrate Communion 6 times per year. Service of Communion varies, but typically, it is served with pieces of bread or a gluten-free wafer and a very small glass of grape juice. You are welcome to come to the front of the church when the congregation comes forward or to be served at your seat if you prefer. You may also choose not to participate.
