United Church of Canada

Shaughnessy Heights United Church is a proud congregation of The United Church of Canada.

History

The United Church of Canada is a Protestant Christian denomination and one of the largest churches in Canada. It was founded in 1925 through the merger of four Protestant denominations:

  • The Methodist Church of Canada
  • The Congregational Union of Canada
  • About two-thirds of the Presbyterian Church in Canada
  • The Association of Local Union Churches

What we Believe

The United Church of Canada is known for its progressive theology, inclusivity, and social justice advocacy.

We believe in the Trinity (God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) and upholds scripture, tradition, reason, and experience as sources of faith.

The United Church of Canada emphasizes a personal relationship with God, a commitment to loving one’s neighbour, and ethical living over strict dogma.

Doors painted in rainbow colours are lined up and on them is written "God's doors are open for all".

Inclusivity

The United Church has been a pioneer in LGBTQ+ inclusion. In 1988, it affirmed that sexual orientation is not a barrier to ordered ministry, and it supports same-sex marriage.

Truth and Reconciliation

The United Church of Canada recognizes that we now stand at a crucial time in the life of the church, and the history of Canada, when we can see the journey through. For more than thirty years, the United Church and Indigenous peoples have been on a journey towards mutuality, respect and equity. Towards reconciliation. Towards justice.

Social Justice

The Church is actively involved in climate justice, poverty reduction, refugee support, Indigenous rights, and anti-racism work.
