  •  2:00 pm go on a A guided tour of UBC’s Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre
  • Visit Chief J Hart’s Reconciliation Pole

UBC’s Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre (IRSHDC) addresses the colonial legacy of residential schools and other policies imposed by the Canadian government on Indigenous Peoples, and ensures that this history is acknowledged, examined, and understood. On our staff guided experience, we’ll have the opportunity to explore the building, learn more about historical and contemporary issues relating to the residential school system, and engage with records and collections. https://irshdc.ubc.ca

The IRSHDC has lovely grounds for a picnic and conversation. So please come and enjoy a picnic lunch with other SHUCians. At 2 pm we will have a guided tour of the Centre lasting approximately 1 hour. For those who wish to stay and explore further – the Centre is open until 4 pm. Some may wish to walk down to James Hart Reconciliation Pole located on Main Mall between Agronomy Road and Thunderbird Boulevard,. https://indigenous.ubc.ca/indigenous-engagement/featured-initiatives/reconciliation-pole/ and https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/reconciliation-totem-pole-goes-up-at-ubc-1.4050078

Parking is available in the Rose Garden Parking Lot. Car Pooling is a good option. If taking transit: 15 bus routes link UBC to Metro Vancouver, along with two on-campus routes to serve the on-campus community. Plan your trip or look at a map of transit routes.

The Centre is located between the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre and Koerner Library on Main Mall. The entrance to the Centre is just opposite the west side of the Barber Centre.

We hope to see you there! Your Reconciliation Matters Team: Tom Beasley, Heather Clarke, Susan Dent, Dave Moors, Clif Prowse, Deb Walker
